ABA Issues Guidelines on News Handling Ethics
Chicago AP report outlines the new Code of Professional Responsibility for lawyers guiding news coverage of crimes. It covers pre arrest release rules, during arrest or charge reporting, and trial coverage, with emphasis on avoiding prejudicial statements while preserving press freedom. The code effective Jan 1 1970 applies to about 141000 ABA members and follows voluntary state bar agreements in many states.
