Jon Bailey from the Center for Rural Affairs argues the 2007 farm bill favors the wealthiest landowners and fails to curb rural population losses. Supporters stress payments keep rural areas from drying up while critics seek reallocations to rejuvenate communities.
Southwest Kansas would face hardship without subsidies and farm payment programs. Bailey notes little rural development money compared with commodity payments while advocates from agri business groups say payments slow farm consolidation and keep communities viable. Russell Komlofske Finney County Farm Bureau secretary treasurer and president Carol Deaver with board member Mike Deaver back the safety net amid heated debate.
Editor's note announces day six of a six part series on the federal farm bill and farm payments flowing into Main Street businesses. It notes rural Kansas counties face long term population declines as the agrarian way of life fades across Kansas and the Midwest. See Payments, Page A8
Finney County Economic Development Corp. will not pursue a third sales tax ballot at this time. FCEDC President Eric Depperschmidt said the board will review the quarterly report Monday, reiterating the August decision not to pursue another tax vote. Funding sources include Garden City, Finney County, Garden City Community College, Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, and Holcomb. The tax would have extended highway improvements and could have raised about 1.2 to 1.4 million. The 2005 vote to fund the FCEDC also failed. Meeting set for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Finney County Administrative Center.
