Supreme Court case on gay elder in CT church draws Sept hearing
The Presbyterian Church U S A will hear arguments Sept 14 in Downers Grove Illinois on Wayne Osborne whose installation as an elder in Stamford Connecticut was challenged. Osborne is openly gay but has not stated if sexually active. The case tests how much inquiry about sexual behavior is allowed for church officers. The General Assembly voted to lift the ban but ratification by 173 presbyteries is pending over the next year. Meanwhile the United Methodist Church launched a national TV ad campaign to recruit members with a $20 million four year program backed by training for local churches and a church locator site at unitedmethodist.org.
