Kansas Unemployment Tax Reallocation Changes Take Effect Ahead

Kansas lawmakers revised the unemployment insurance program in 2013 to shift costs between negative and positive balance employers. The base wage for taxable payroll rose from 8000 to 12000 in 2015 and to 14000 in 2016, aiming to incentivize better employee records and fund stability. Positive-balance firms face lower total contributions and last year enjoyed a 15 percent rate reduction. The fund strength has improved with more hiring and less turnover, with continuing claims near 2008 levels this week.
