Empty storefront sign signals Wichita County's slow decline
In western Kansas, Wichita County faces population loss for four decades. A once busy center with Duckwall's Lumber Yard and Land O Lakes mill now faded, eight jobs gone since July. The county of 2,300 has shed 200 people since the last census, amid long rural population decline. Kansas leads in wheat and grain sorghum production while farmers rely on substantial taxpayer support.
