Veterans group sues Kansas charity over Purple Heart name
The Military Order of the Purple Heart filed a federal lawsuit against Tonganoxie based Purple Heart Veterans Foundation seeking a permanent injunction to bar use of the Purple Heart trademark. The suit accuses the foundation of misleading fundraising while an AP investigation found only 11 cents of every dollar donated supports veterans. Foundation director Andrew Gruber, who founded the charity in 2009, says he may dissolve the group after the suit and notes he was unaware of the MOPH. He acknowledges past legal issues including a prison term for a rental car theft. Gruber plans to transfer leadership of another nonprofit, Kids vs Cancer, to his brother unsettled by the case.
