Senior Judge John Wecker will oversee the Finney County case against Clay Hummer after six judges recused themselves due to potential conflicts of interest. Hummer, 36, faces 69 counts including criminal threats stalking harassment by telephone and violation of a stalking order. A court date has not been set pending Wecker's schedule.
The Finney County United Way marked its 60th anniversary with a kickoff luncheon at Wheat Lands Conference Center. Campaign co chair Phil Escareno announced 2007 Pacesetters have raised 80 477 95 dollars for 20 local agencies. American State Bank led by example with 100 percent employee participation. The 23 Pacesetter businesses include Aquila Bank of the West and Garden City USD 457 among others.
Alfredo Gurmendi, thoracic vascular surgeon, leaves his post at St Catherine Hospital to pursue a thoracic surgery program in Boston. He announced in a Telegram paid advertisement that a satisfying career as a thoracic surgeon in Garden City is not possible and will begin work in Boston on Oct. 1.
The Garden City High School lunch period was shortened by 10 minutes to reduce lunchtime fights and discipline problems. Police Capt. Mike Utz notes potential new issues as students must be in class by 11 46 a.m. after 11 06 a.m. dismissal, with early signs of traffic violations yet to be seen. Principal James Mireles says the move aims to improve order with the lingering effects to be watched.
Southwest Kansas welcomed September with rainfall modest yet welcome, as 0.51 inches fell Thursday night at the Kansas State University Research Extension Center. Year-to-date total reached 14.57 inches, 0.79 inches below the 15.36 average, with August rainfall at 2.57 inches. Garden City Regional Airport logged 0.31 inches in August and 3.82 inches for the month, 1.25 inches above average.
