Mrs Willard Keane of 1308 A is the familiar September figure. She, along with two other crossing guards, will serve through the school year and keep 8th and Kansas safe during arrivals. Keane held the post last year and was the first mother to volunteer for crossing duties. Awaiting signal is Katherine Paxson, 10.
A Labor Day weekend toll nears 422 fatalities as thousands travel homeward amid heavy traffic. Highways jammed. Safety Council urges common sense and patience. Notable deaths include Mrs. Harold Jeffries and 11 year old Thomas Doerfler in separate crashes. other injuries reported across Kansas cities.
Partly cloudy skies tonight with a few thundershowers and a low around 66 to 70. Tuesday brings sun and more thundershowers, winds shift from south to north and pick up. Across Kansas eight casualties noted as seven died and seven injured in two car crashes near Concordia and Manhattan. Fort Riley soldiers among the fatally injured. Funeral plans await the arrival of his four children. Survivors include his wife and three daughters Mary, Cynthia, Martha, and a son John. He had extensive grain interests across the region, including elevators at Hutchinson.
Iceland charged a British warship used force to block a Coast Guard attempt to arrest a British trawler within Iceland’s 12 mile limit. The Palliser steamed in with guns manned, preventing approach to the offending trawler. Iceland warns fines and confiscation will follow. Britain says it may take the matter to the U N General Assembly.
