Mixed corn yields in Finney County harvest wraps up
In Finney County soybean harvest is done and corn is about 95 percent complete. Ken Jameson, grain manager at Garden City Co op, says milo varies and corn may average about 60 percent of last year, with 7.5 to 8 million bushels. Fall harvest was tough in southwest Kansas, aided by crop insurance, and drought from the Ogallala Aquifer worsened yields. See Harvest, Page A5.

G C couple convicted of child abuse in Garden City
A Garden City woman Josefina Palma, 32, was sentenced Oct. 12 to eight years in prison after convictions on three counts of aggravated battery, one count of child abuse and three misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and criminal threat. Her stepfather, Ismael Castro, 37, was convicted Oct. 21 on multiple counts of aggravated battery and child abuse amid a week-long jury trial.
