California wildfires kill 13 in San Diego area
Wildfires fanned by Santa Ana winds devoured neighborhoods across Southern California. At least 13 people died, 825 homes destroyed, and more than 30,000 remained at risk as fires burned from the Mexican border to the Los Angeles suburbs. Over 7,000 firefighters fought the blazes amid major highways closed and air travel disrupted. The Cedar Fire in San Diego County accounted for nine deaths and about 260 homes lost. Authorities linked a Julian signal fire to the Cedar outbreak. a second San Diego fire killed two and destroyed 57 homes. A state of emergency covered four counties.
