Little Angels Consignment Sale Spurs ABC Center Fundraiser

The Little Angels Consignment Sale continues today as a fundraiser for ABC Pregnancy Center. The sale at First Southern Baptist Church, 2708 N Third St, features infant clothes toys furniture children’s and maternity wear strollers and more. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m with items at half price from 2 to 4 p.m.

School board to report iPad program update

The USD 457 Board of Education will hear a Monday update on the 1-to-1 iPad implementation at Garden City High School. GCHS principal James Mireles, associate principal Renee Scott, instructional technologist Casey Wise, and instructional technology coordinator Layne Schiffelbein will discuss progress and logistics. The board approved the initiative in April by a 5-2 vote.

City Commission approves purchase and zoning changes

The City Commission accepted Marshall Woodberry’s offer of 70000 to buy the Mary and Fleming street lot. It rezoned 2815 Jennie Barker Road to single family residential and 1107 W Olive St to single housing. approved 1008 N Main St rezoning to single-family. and classified 2315 Tonio Ave nuisances for removal. A new burst logo entrance sign was proposed for CVB. An MOU with Siemens Industry to analyze energy savings for city facilities was approved. A 10000 payment to Southwest Kansas Coalition and Pinegar Smith & Associates was authorized. Pavement markings will visually narrow Spruce Street at Fleming Street.

NIP to Begin Large Community Garden Project

Neighborhood Improvement Project students will start a large community garden on Oct. 27 behind East Garden Village mobile home park in Garden City. About 200 garden boxes will be built using old railroad ties donated by Burlington Northern, with a 300-student turnout expected including local sports teams and clubs. The project includes an accessibility row, irrigation by the city, and a link to Salvation Army plots for underprivileged residents. This effort rivals Make a Difference Day and invites community adults to join starting at 9 a.m. with Emma Banuelos as contact.

Appeals Court revives Kansas school funding case

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled that Shawnee Mission School District parents have standing to challenge a local option tax cap. The ruling sends the case back to district court where Judge Langstrum will decide if the cap violates equal protection and due process as part of Kansas funding formula revisions.
