The Kiwanis Club recognized two Glencrest High School students for outstanding achievement. The ceremony highlighted academic excellence and community service, with honorees praised by club members and school officials.
In Arcadia California a century old peacock population linked to Elias J Lucky Baldwin has grown to about 1200 birds. They roam roofs gardens and streets. The birds disrupt traffic and even drown out a local Philharmonic event. City offers a brochure Our Neighbors the Peacocks with tips including water hoses to deter them.
In Anaheim a half ton bull named Nighthawk escaped during a bull riding event. Owner Julio Moreno grabbed a rope and, with cowboy Shorty Gorham, pursued the animal as police diverted traffic. After a mile chase they lassoed the bull in front of a car dealership.
Garden City High School with 1,906 students and 208 staff operates across a main building J D Adams Hall a music wing and four mobile classrooms. Principal Kevin Burr calls the campus a small city urging a November bond measure of 35.5 million dollars to fund a second high school stadium upgrades and elementary expansions.
Inquiry questions the potential tax impact of a local bond issue. It asks who would pay most, whether renters bear higher costs indirectly, and how much bills could climb if the bond passes. Local residents await clearer figures.
Beth Tedrow and Tom Walker reminisce about Garden City High School in 1954 1955, the first graduating class on the Clifford Hope Auditorium stage and the bond between high school and college students. They recall the junior college on the top floor, close campus life, band rituals, and a bustling early campus culture.
Karen Cannaley favors a kid's-eye view to connect with children. She works with Parents as Teachers for five years, serves as Nursery Director at Bible Christian Church for about 11 months, and frequently substitutes at Garden City High School Day Care. Her early start in childcare began at age 11 babysitting, leading to teaching.
Cannaley works at Community Day Care while studying Early Childhood at Garden City CC and raising three children. In PAT she assists newborns to 3 year olds with monthly visits and runs playgroups at 10 am and 1 pm Wednesdays and Tuesday evenings for the high school day care.
Pablo Cos Castro, a 23-year-old Garden City resident, died in a rollover east of Pierceville while riding in a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by his girlfriend Christy Enriquez, who also from Garden City, with their 4-month-old son Vale Rio Castro-Huffman unharmed and restrained in the back seat. The crash also injured Enriquez minor injuries reported.
