Garden City among three districts fail AYP in reading
Garden City and two nearby districts miss federal AYP thresholds with low reading scores across Hispanic and poor student groups. Sublette and Hugoton districts also trail in reading and math, despite some campuses meeting certain marks. Officials cite test format changes and new strategies as ongoing efforts to improve performance.

Budget-busting winter heating bills expected
The Energy Department foresees winter heating costs rising 33 to 50 percent for most households. Natural gas users may pay about 350 dollars more, fuel oil 378 dollars more, with propane similar to fuel oil. Regional variations and the Midwest’s gas reliance could push costs higher if cold weather returns.

Local sales tax study group seeks public clarity
The task force received a $1,000 check from Aquila Inc for advertising and promotion but estimates $2,000 to $3,000 more is needed. City commissioners noted public confusion over whether the sales tax is new or a continuation of highway funding and that receipts will fund economic development. Nine applications for two FCEDC board seats were narrowed to four finalists. Advertising for president and vice president roles funded by the tax has begun. The FCEDC meets again Nov. 15 to decide future funding.
