Graves sees no tax hike for Kansas schools in 2001
Governor Bill Graves said a tax increase to fund public schools is unlikely and perhaps unnecessary given a improving budget outlook. He noted education spending will dominate the 2001 session as legislators consider rewriting the 1992 school funding formula and reviewed a 13 member task force to study revisions. He argued the formula balances districts with declining and growing enrollment but lacks funding for technology. He defended the task force’s closed meeting as advisory and not public body.
