Agency aids victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault
Lana Christensen, director of Mission to assist victims of domestic violence, explains a 29 member staff and volunteers served over 1,000 clients in 2004, 994 from Finney County. Programs include Heart for battered women, Little Hearts for children, Rape Crisis, Domestic Violence advocacy, and Speaker's Bureau. 2005 budget is 237,000 with 27,000 from United Way, which funds supplies, salaries, and client services. Education Board eyed after school plan for district
The Education Board reviewed a two hour after school program for City High School, Charles O Stones Center and Edith Scheuerman Elementary for 2004 05. At risk criteria and funding limits shape enrollment to about 100 per building with transportation snacks tutoring and activities including revitalized Project Effort clubs. Night school and clubs at Garden City High may receive at risk funds and the district will assess program effectiveness. Also consideration of a YMCA agreement to fund starting blocks for the GCHS pool was on the agenda.

Algiers Reopens as New Orleans Warms to Recovery
In the hurricane aftermath the Algiers neighborhood across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter reopened to residents on Monday. About a third of New Orleans' 500000 people live in reopened areas where electricity is restored but drinkable water remains available only in Algiers. Hazards persist from bacteria flooded waters to sewage repairs, with garbage stench and pitch black streets. Some residents have moved back then left, including Billy Tassin who vowed to abandon the stinking city after mud-drenched damage.
