Pay to play fees spread across Kansas districts
Many districts raise costs for students to participate in activities as part of a wider trend toward pay to play. Lawrence launched substantial fees including $240 yearly bus tickets and a $10 technology levy to fund rising costs, while Hutchinson and McPherson also added charges. The pattern varies by district, with some waiving fees for low income families and others shielding programs from cuts. Across Kansas, activity expenses average 1.2 percent of budgets, with gate receipts covering 35 percent, and transportation and uniforms commonly funded by districts.
