Kansas high school football playoffs face calls for system overhaul
The Kansas system began in 1969 with four regions and four qualifiers per class. Over 48 years tweaks added complexity but not solved inequities. For Classes 3A and 4A, 16 districts produce 64 teams with five day turnaround for first round. District champs host or travel, East West brackets divide 16 teams per side, and most first round results follow a familiar pattern with home field advantage for district champions.
