Kansas governor vetoes budget items and raises sales tax
Governor Mark Parkinson rewrote the next Kansas budget with vetoes to shield greenhouse gas rules and protect Planned Parenthood public broadcasting and state employees pay. He signed a $13.7 billion budget and a bill raising the sales tax from 5.3 to 6.3 percent to fund spending. He vetoed 11 budget items including a 5 percent elected official pay cut and out of state travel limits, and blocked a plan diverting public broadcasting funds to veterans programs. Public TV and radio stations faced potential funding cuts, with Smokey Hills and High Plains Public Radio seeing notable reductions without the veto.
