By ruffing the six of spades at trick two and then cashing clubs, diamonds, and spades exactly as earlier, the slam could be made if East held fewer than four clubs. The critical play is the spade ruff at trick two, which increases winning odds and prevents a later safe spade return from East. If East holds four clubs including the queen and K diamonds, the slam fails.
