Windsor Hotel cupola restoration fundraiser gains pace
A fast-growing fundraiser for the Windsor Hotel cupola renovation has raised about $11,000 toward a $39,000 goal in the campaign's first month. Hallie Harness and Don Harness lead the effort as the cupola, a pressed tin structure, suffers water damage and pigeon guano. The project includes repairing rafters, replacing rotten wood, restoring tin work, painting in period colors, and a 15-foot flagpole. Donations continue online through August 30, with a Kanstarter campaign started May 1 raising $4,480 by Tuesday.

House panel advances revenue plan to floor in Kansas
In Topeka the House tax committee voted 8 to 6 to send Rep. Mark Huttons plan to the floor. The package would raise about 448 million next year by taxing nonbusiness income at 2.7 percent and expanding local sales tax authority in Bourbon, Thomas and Douglas counties while freezing income tax rates and hiking cigarette taxes. It also would raise the sales tax to 6.45 percent for three years and shrink the food rate to 5.9 percent. Opposition from some Republicans was noted.
