Six mile wide tornado devastates Joplin Missouri Sunday leaving homes destroyed and residents scrambling for missing neighbors and belongings. Kira Mitchell and her husband Austin survived after seeking shelter in a bathtub with cushions and a family pet. Mitchell noted her house remains one of only about a dozen still standing nearby as sirens and unusual sky conditions preceded the storm. Freeman Hospital staffer Austin Mitchell was about to work his ER shift when the storm hit.
Rescue teams braved rain and winds in Joplin Missouri after a killer tornado struck Sunday night. The death toll rose to 116 with 17 survivors pulled from rubble, as Gov. Nixon pledged continued searches and President Obama promised federal aid and support.
John Scheopner, a business owner and civic leader, resigned from the USD 457 Board of Education after 14 years of service. The unanimous board accepted the departure, citing personal reasons, and Gloria Hopkins was chosen to fill the vice president role. The shakeup leaves only Hopkins and Jean Clifford from the current board as new members Mark Rude, Thomas Blackburn, Tim Cruz, and Alex Wallace will replace retiring directors.
