Kansas water plan moves forward as Ogallala depletion looms

At a Governor’s Water Conference, officials unveiled the second draft of a statewide plan to curb aquifer depletion by 2064. Western Kansas faces 70 percent drawdown, 40 percent of current irrigation may fail at a 400 gallon per minute pump, and 40 percent of reservoir space could fill with sediment within 50 years. Basin teams propose measurable, time-bound goals to reduce usage, diversify water sources, and safeguard economic activity, with final plans due to Brownback in November.
