USD 457 updates K-8 tech pilot program students
USD 457 board members and Superintendent Steve Karlin were given iPads as teachers demonstrated a spring 2017 K-8 technology pilot across seven classes. Nine teachers participated in programs using SeeSaw Nearpod Class Dojo and Class Craft to boost parent involvement and student engagement. The board took no action on the plan, citing funding uncertainties and promising more details later.

GCHS will host semester school May 24 to 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enrollment starts 7:45 a.m. in the Arts and Communications Commons Area, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd. Students needing English, math, science, social studies or electives may enroll if they have a 50 percent grade or better. Rollin Kraft of Lakin won first place in the third grade division of Smoky Hills PBS Kids Writers Contest 2017. SHPTV drew 125 entries from 12 Kansas communities between January and March.

Garden City USD 457 to start summer meal and B O B program
The district launches Books on the Bus with Kids Meals on Wheels assisting at Garden City sites from June 5. Free summer breakfasts and lunches run Monday through Thursday for ages 18 and under at Garfield Early Childhood Center, Stones Intermediate, and Garden City High School, with multiple school venues offering meals through late July. Supper and sack meals are available at local churches on select days. The new school year begins August 11 with a half day and August 12 as the first full day.
