Woolworth Building crowns NYC skyline in 1913 debut
In April 1913 the Woolworth Building rose 702 feet as New York celebrated with a Wall Street banquet and fireworks while President Wilson pressed a button lighting 80,000 bulbs. Architect Cass Gilbert crafted Gothic details and a cathedral like arcade. The 58th floor observation gallery drew crowds until Navy closure in 1941 and is now a Manhattan executive clinic. Police later nabbed a thief targeting tourists at the Rome Coliseum, a venerable long running beat.
