Bills clash with U.S. guidance on school restroom rules
A federal advisory to public schools says access to restrooms and sex segregated facilities must reflect a student’s gender identity, conflicting with Kansas 2016 bills that would base usage on a child’s chromosomes. Officials honor fallen officers in memorial ceremony
The Finney County Law Enforcement Center event remembered Kent Newport, a 20 year Kansas Highway Patrol veteran and former sheriff's deputy who died in 2014 after aiding a burglary suspect pursuit. Newport’s name was added to the state memorial on May 6 during Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day observances in Topeka. Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue recalled Newport’s service from 1984 to 1989 and his 1981 start with the sheriff's office.

Two added to GCHS Hall of Fame
Garden City High School inducted alumni John P. Wheeler Jr and John D. Pinegar into its Hall of Fame, the 61st and 62nd graduates honored. Wheeler, a 1965 GCHS alum and former Finney County attorney, is running for the 123rd District seat in the Kansas House. He was nominated by Police Chief Michael Utz during the Friday ceremony.
