On Easter Sunday Foster Jayden De La Rosa and Quinton Mead were seen climbing several trees in a local park, drawing attention from spectators and prompting discussion about outdoor activity during the holiday.
Michael E. Collins and Dr. Timothy L. Williamson, former Garden City High School students, joined the Hall of Fame during a Friday ceremony marking 22 years of honors. They credited teachers and shared career paths at the event before about 50 attendees.
Alta Brown and Garfield elementary schools in Garden City will join two other city elementary schools in receiving Reading First grants for the upcoming academic year. The USD 457 Board of Education is set to act Monday night on accepting the $346,980 grant and to hear a report from district reading coaches.
The No Child Left Behind law requires 100 percent core classes taught by highly qualified teachers, but no state will meet this target this year. Some states progress varies as they work to improve staffing and training, while penalties remain uncertain.
The Education Department said no state will have a 100 percent highly qualified teaching force in all core classes for the 2006-07 school year. Nine states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico face penalties for late plans, with Alaska Delaware Idaho Iowa Minnesota Montana Nebraska North Carolina cited for not meeting timely compliance.
Washington reports that Kansas representative Jerry Moran's district would get more money from the Senate energy aid package than any other district, part of a broad $1.5 billion plan tucked into a war and Katrina spending bill. The Environmental Working Group warns most farmers nationwide would be affected, while critics say the aid is excessive.
Kansas lawmakers signed a bill creating Water Transition Assistance Program to help irrigators convert to dryland farming. The voluntary plan aims to cut groundwater use from the High Plains Aquifer with incentives, targeting districts in western Kansas. Beneficiaries include Moran's district, with a potential $75.2 million share, while overall aid totals about $1.5 billion.
