Bush pledges aid for Africa in AIDS fight
President Bush pledged 200 million dollars to combat AIDS and other diseases in Africa with Nigerian President Obasanjo and UN Secretary General Annan present. The fund aims at 7 to 10 billion dollars, with more money expected later, as global leaders push for a larger war chest and an international plan set for a June UN General Assembly session. Critics call the initial pledge insufficient while supporters urge immediate funding and sustained international cooperation.

Senate compromise bill cuts top tax rate to 36 percent
Senate tax writers Grassley and Baucus proposed a compromise plan reducing the top income tax rate from 39.6 percent to 36 percent and trimming rates by three points by 2007. It would give $300 to individuals and $600 to couples as an early refund, raise exemptions to 1 million in 2002 and 4 million by 2010, and phase out the marriage penalty while expanding IRA and 401k limits and raising the child tax credit to 1,000.
