Wheat crop in region varies after cold spell and late mows
Grant County based United Prairie Ag says conditions differ across fields. Three weeks of subnormal temperatures and a drought plus a freeze hurt irrigated wheat most, while some areas look only modestly affected. Farmers fear yields will be well below last year, with some harvests uncertain and timing critical.

Garden City's Bypass Set to Reopen Monday
Garden City's US 96 85 400 bypass will reopen to traffic Monday with the northbound offramp at Kansas Avenue remaining under construction for several days. The project widened and rebuilt a one third mile section near Schulman Avenue, added turn lanes and a traffic signal at Schulman, and a Kansas Avenue offramp reopening is slated for May 17. Detours will guide northbound traffic to Schulman Avenue and Jennie Barker Road. Schulman Avenue and the frontage road east of the bypass will open to locals on Monday, while west of the bypass the road remains closed to through traffic. Schulman Avenue is expected to reopen for through traffic in early June. Street signals at Spruce and the bypass have returned to normal operation. The project cost 2,898,780 and is funded by KDOT and Garden City, with Menards as anchor for a two-phase 67 million retail development nearby.
