A local feature ties regional trafficking through Garden City to a meth epidemic in Iowa and Nebraska. Officers cite cross‑border supply and addicts share ruined lives. The series explores how meth use rewires the brain and causes physical decay, while labs in farmland areas misuse ammonia and threaten nearby residents amid drivers chasing longer shifts.

A 1999 survey shows 4.3 percent of the U S population or about 9.4 million had tried meth. The 18 to 25 age group shows 5.2 percent lifetime use, while 1.4 percent of 12 to 17 year olds and 4.5 percent of 26 plus had used the drug. Among high school seniors in 2000, 7.9 percent had tried meth, with eighth and 10th graders at 4.2 and 6.9 percent. About 27.8 percent of seniors said meth was fairly easy or very easy to obtain. A 2001 Omaha meth delivery led to arrests of Garden City residents, highlighting a persistent four state trafficking network.
A month before proceedings resume, Colorado and Kansas remain millions apart in a restitution agreement and future water allocation from the Arkansas River. Kansas sued Colorado in 1985, alleging overuse beyond the 1949 compact. The Supreme Court backed Kansas in 1995, and the dispute over damages and water shares continues. The case returns to court for further action.
City commissioners move toward final approval of an $8 million Kansas Department of Health and Environment loan to fund a long‑planned water supply project.
