Century-old uncapped brine well found near geysers in Hutchinson
City crews using a backhoe uncovered an uncapped brine well near several gas-brine geysers that erupted in January. Geophysicist Jianghai Xia of the Kansas Geological Survey notes the well was installed a century ago and suggests another pair may exist. The find helps explain gas leaks from the Yaggy storage field that caused January explosions damaging two downtown buildings and claimed two mobile home occupants.
