Senate gambling bill bogged down by smoking feud in Topeka
In Topeka the Kansas Senate delayed a gambling bill amid clashes over banning smoking in state owned casinos. Lawmakers debated restricting smoking as part of a plan to profit from slots at racetracks in Kansas City Kan and Frontenac with a southeast corner casino proposal. Supporters say up to 20 million annually could be gained, while opponents fear lost revenues if smoking is prohibited. The bill would raise track owners' share of slot revenues and set a new investment minimum for a southeast Kansas casino, backing Eureka Downs and Anthony Downs though neither will run slots this year.
