Vast swarm of caterpillars seen near Lawrence
University of Kansas ornithology collection manager Mark Robbins filmed tens of thousands of caterpillars feeding on hackberry trees at KU Fitch Natural History Reservation north of Lawrence. He described a rainlike sound from droppings as the insects prepare to molt into Hackberry Emperor butterflies, calling it unprecedented in nearly two decades of woodland walks. Kansas State University biologist Dave Amtowl cautioned about potential ecological effects of the surge.
