Fire damages Windriver Grain mill in Garden City
Two fires at Windriver Grain LLC on Sunday caused extensive damage with no monetary estimate yet. Fire Chief Allen Shelton said a sheriff's deputy spotted heavy smoke and flames from the top of Windriver Grain. Firefighters arrived at 9:40 a.m. and spent three hours extinguishing the first blaze in the mill. Sparks from a welder near the conveyer belts had smoldered the plastic and rubber, continuing after workers left. A second call after 2 p.m. found grain in the chute smoldering and burning, though no damage was reported from that blaze and it took 1 1/2 hours to extinguish.
