Enrollment numbers show no exodus at Garden City schools
Andrew Bach reports enrollment figures show no mass exodus after the ConAgra Beef Co fire. Between Sept 20, 2000, and April 17, 2001, the district lost 147 students, compared with 78 the prior year, with some losses expected before the fall count. GCHS lost 100 students year to date, down from 116 last year, as administrators cite retention efforts and summer gains. The exact impact of ConAgra remains uncertain until fall enrollment stabilizes.

State Wheat Tour Predicts Dismal Kansas Harvest
WICHITA AP After three days of touring Kansas fields, participants in the Kansas Wheat Tour forecast a harvest of about 277.6 million bushels. Brett Myers of the Kansas Wheat Growers Association called the projection disappointing but not unexpected. The group also estimated an average yield of 32.7 bushels per acre, well below last year's 41.4. The strongest wheat is in counties south of Interstate 70 from eastern Barton to far eastern Kansas.
