Kansas pension talks hinge on 401(k) commitment
Kansas lawmakers face a binary choice on whether to commit now to a 401(k) style retirement plan for public workers or delay the decision. KPERS shows a $7.7 billion funding gap through 2033, with Gov Brownback pressing for action as House and Senate negotiators seek a path amid opposition from Democrats and employee groups. The Senate favors a study commission and modest funding increases, while the House seeks a post-2013 401(k) plan for new hires and penalties for remaining in traditional KPERS. The stalemate centers on whether to pursue immediate reform or stall for a year, amid a tense fiscal fight over long-term benefits.

Dreamland Motel in Kansas Demolished Tied to OKC Bombing
City crews began tearing down the abandoned Dreamland Motel in Grandview Plaza near Junction City after a March 15 council vote. The motel housed Timothy McVeigh in 1995 while planning the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 and injured 800, as investigators traced the Ryder truck to Junction City and Elliott’s Body Shop. McVeigh was later executed in 2001, with Terry Nichols serving multiple life sentences in Colorado.
