Canola hopes rise in Kansas fields as yields near harvest
Agronomist Holman reports steady early signs for canola profitability in south central Kansas. With 2,000 pounds per acre possible and prices near 15 cents a pound, canola could surpass wheat by about 33 percent in gross profit per acre, though final yields depend on late spring conditions. Kansas State and Oklahoma State breeders estimate 8,000 to 10,000 acres planted, many in Barber, Harper, Pratt and Sumner counties, with harvest due in about a month.

Tragedy on the Rails: Two Wrecks Kill One in Kansas
Kansas Highway Patrol reports two separate train related crashes. A Holcomb teen, Tyler Terry, 16, died after his Ford Ranger hit a Garden City Western Railway line crossing on Anderson Road. He crossed one set of tracks, failed to clear the second as a slow train struck his vehicle at seven to eight mph. The other crash involved a vehicle halted on tracks, with inquiries into seat belt use and why the car remained on the rails. Responding agencies included KHP, Kearny EMS, sheriff and fire departments. Officials warned that trains take longer to stop due to mass and speed and urged drivers to always expect a train and to heed signals.
