Families cling to Daddy Dolls as troops deploy
Fort Riley soldiers fight in Iraq and Afghanistan as children cope with deployment using Daddy Dolls and Flat Daddys. Anna Pribyla, whose father Capt. Eric Pribyla serves with Charlie Company, sleeps with a doll bearing his image while mothers stress routine and emotional support amid casualties and extended war.

Military Families Remember Daddy Deployed At War
More than 150000 U.S. service members are deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in multiple waves. Families, especially younger ones, cope by using the Daddy Doll and Flat Daddy poster to help children feel connected while a parent is away for a year or more. Dolly-like keepsakes accompany children to doctor visits and the first day of school, staying with them as a link to the deployed parent. Dyal offers thousands of 17 inch dolls for 25 dollars and 12 inch dolls for 19 dollars, while Flat Daddies were created by Sgt. 1st Class Barbara Claudel of the Maine National Guard. Toledo firm SFC Graphics prints posters at little or no cost, with orders exceeding 1500 and sponsors sought to cover the 49.50 dollar production and shipping cost.
