Finney County residents voted down a 10 year continuation of the county building fund in a special election. About 1,283 voters opposed the 1 mill levy to fund maintenance, 784 supported it, with roughly 2,069 of 16,406 registered voters casting ballots. Commissioners noted the margin may delay the fund for now.
Lakin High School and Kearny County responders staged a realistic mock drinking and driving crash. EMTs treated injured teens, two victims lay under a car and were covered with sheets. Students watched from the sidelines as officers and firefighters simulated a disaster to deter drinking and driving.
Sheriff Brad Clark reports 87 incident reports this year, about a third more than in prior years, while staffing remains tight with two full-time and one part-time officers and three full-time and three part-time dispatchers. Pay cuts and health insurance deductions deter applicants, with starting wages at 9 dollars for deputies and 6.63 for dispatchers. The county budget dropped from 219,387 in 2002 to 204,000 in 2003 and now 196,500 this year, affecting benefits and morale.
Garden City police released a photograph of a tall white man in a light colored dress with blue flowers a brown wig and a cap believed to have robbed Commerce Bank at 512 N Seventh St around 9 45 Tuesday morning. Four employees were present and the suspect fled northeast with an undisclosed amount of cash. The drive through at the Seventh Street branch resumed normal hours after the incident as investigators continue to pursue leads.
