Technical centers drive growth plan in rural Kansas schools

In Pittsburg a 30,000 square foot Southeast Kansas Career and Technical Education Center houses welding and other trades for seven rural and town high schools. The initiative expands tuition free postsecondary CTE classes for Kansas students, linking local youth with regional employers and boosting economic growth in Crawford and Cherokee counties. City officials and Fort Scott College back the project, hoping to attract new businesses and provide critical jobs training for area youths.

Trade center offers hands on training for high school and adults

Powell and about three dozen students at Crawford County tech center learn masonry carpentry or welding this February morning. Fourteen are in his class as instructor Davis Oehme supervises one on one sessions. The center fills a gap left by Pittsburg State University, enabling career training alongside traditional degrees. Powell attends Southeast High and values having this option. See Technical Page A5
