City OKs eminent domain in Garden City project

Garden City commissioners 3-2 voted to pursue eminent domain against Ce cil O Brate over a 3.44 acre parcel near the K 156 Jen nie Barker Road Mary Street intersection tied to the highway reconfiguration. City attorney Randall Grisell said no agreement had been approved and a petition will determine Eminent domain rights and public purpose.

Police: Fatal fire started by child in house

Police say 3 year old Derik Johnson started the February blaze at 506 N Ninth St by playing with a lighter. The child died Feb 8 after being airlifted to Via Christi. His mother LaMona Johnson survived with burns and was treated locally. Authorities forwarded the case to Finney County Attorney for review. no charges against family members expected.

Senate backs 466 million plan for Kansas school finance

The Senate Education Committee endorsed a 466 million three year school finance package to satisfy a Kansas Supreme Court ruling. The bill moves to the Senate for debate as lawmakers plan to resume sessions after a break with other items on the table including penalties for sex offenders and tax cuts.
