House approves first round health bill compromise in Kansas

The Kansas House granted first round approval to a health care bill offering a year of state aid for poor families to buy insurance. The bill, a compromise between Democrats and Republicans, aims to reduce costs for workers with insurance and maintain coverage when changing jobs, but it diverges from the broader plan backed by Gov. Sebelius and the Kansas Health Policy Authority. Senate leaders opposed subsidies for the poor, while negotiators prepare final language as lawmakers weigh spending near 23 million for the next fiscal year.
