Custom farming grows as landowners hire others for harvest work
Dick Kraus returned to Wisconsin to farm and now runs a custom farming operation with 45 temporary workers, delivering planting, hay making and harvesting services per acre. The practice appeals to owners seeking lower costs and lifestyle benefits, though fuel and equipment costs remain risks. Other operators like Woody Martin report revenue gains, while consolidation and conservation reduce available land for hired harvesters. Kent Pickard calls custom farming a survival tool for steady cash flow.
