House bill shifts investigation of juvenile abuse claims
TOPEKA The House preliminarily consented to a Senate bill shifting primary responsibility for investigating complaints about state custody children from the attorney general to two state agencies. The bill would keep the AG lead role in abuse and exploitation inquiries for disabled adults while moving juveniles to the Kansas Department of Corrections or the Kansas Department for Children and Families. Local law enforcement could participate as needed, and current staff would be redirected without new hires, though additional funding was proposed to expand capacity. The measure passed the Senate 40 to 0 and heads to final action.
