Kansas Keeps Sixth Rank in Youth Jail Figures
Kansas remains sixth in the nation for youth incarceration as lawmakers weigh tighter court limits on juvenile cases. The bill sets program time caps for various offenses, expands up to 50 youth beds outside prisons, and directs funds to locally funded detention centers and community programs. The Finney County detention center reports 11 juvenile inmates as of March 8, with over 90 percent having recent drug involvement and treatment efforts ongoing.

Detention center aims to reform juvenile justice approach
Pollet advocates education and in home services over incarceration for youth, stressing the detention center differs from a jail and focuses on habilitation. Juveniles at risk receive schooling, with Garden City USD 457 providing two teachers and a paraprofessional. 17 year olds face potential jail time if they violate probation or commit serious crimes.
