Wind projects push Kansas counties to grow energy tax base
Gray County officials discuss leasing land to expand wind capacity with NextEra Energy Resources, building 67 turbines and 13.5 miles of transmission lines east of Montezuma’s Wind Energy Center. Zephyr Wind Power LLC also pursues a large farm potentially spanning Gray Ford and Finney counties. Kansas currently ships 1,021 megawatts annually from eight farms, trailing Texas and California, with DoE noting Kansas high wind potential. A separate Hamilton County project with Acciona may begin this fall, bringing 300000 dollars yearly to the county and creating up to 200 temporary jobs and 10 to 15 full-time roles after completion.
