House panel to review favoritism question in Kansas Medicaid
A Kansas House budget subcommittee will hold a Wednesday hearing on Medicaid fund distribution under Governor Kathleen Sebelius amid allegations of favoritism as she awaits U.S. Senate confirmation. The panel examines a 713000 dollar yearly increase for Community Living Opportunities in Lenexa, chosen by Don Jordan, Sebelius's social services secretary, amid complaints from other providers. Board member Larry Gates contends he discussed funding with staff, while Gates says he never spoke with Sebelius directly. Sebelius says Jordan briefed her but she did not participate in the decision. In other business, the House advanced 30 Open Records Act exceptions renewing five years, including protecting corporate taxes data, child abuse case records, social security numbers, and trade secrets, all to expire July 1, 2014. The House also moved to block Mulvane from pursuing a Turnpike casino and annexation in Sumner County under a 2007 law, a project tied to a private operator and local approvals.
