Sierra Club questions Sunflower landfill liner plan
Sierra Club Kansas Chapter spokesman Craig Volland says Sunflower’s proposed expansion lacks a synthetic liner at the landfill bottom and could threaten groundwater. Sunflower officials counter no liner is needed as the ash poses no hazardous waste, while KDHE reviews public comments and cost estimates range from 25 to 40 million dollars for a liner.

Arkansas River values show modest flow amid thaw and drying
Water gauges along the Arkansas River report modest levels with Garden City at zero flow and nearby towns Syracuse and Coolidge near the 75th to 89th percentiles. Officials note flows from Granada to Deerfield trending downward as irrigation ditches divert water and vegetation reuses it. Spring precipitation will determine whether higher streamflow returns.
