Demolition Ends Era for Garden City Kankakee Hotel
The historic Kankakee Hotel in Garden City was demolished Friday as executors and local officials watched. John Daniel, who built the place in the 1940s, recalled its origins and a grove of ash trees he planted nearby. The property, later renamed Ashpark Hotel under Raymond Randle, stood vacant and was deemed an eyesore. Kerry Spanier, executor, said the city may start improvements on Main Street after the removal.

Best chance to hike education spending in Kansas
Gov. Bill Graves urges rapid action on a major school finance package, warning that failing this year could doom efforts next year. The plan would boost public school funding by about 179 million dollars for fiscal 2002, funded by tax increases including a sales tax rise to 5.1 percent and higher fuel taxes. Senate and House proposals vary, with Senate plans adding 75 million for 2002 and 400 million over three years, but no strong commitment exists amid skepticism of tax hikes. Graves stresses education as essential and notes past tax cuts complicate support.
