Midwest Energy seeks emergency relief from the Kansas Corporation Commission as about 50 southwest Kansas residential customers face gas shutoffs due to elevated hydrogen sulfide readings. ONEOK notified Midwest Energy of the shutoff, with 30 customers to lose gas this week, despite readings mostly between 0 and 4 parts per million. The dispute centers on whether gas safety levels were as widespread as claimed.
Holcomb USD 368 voters April 5 face a sparse ballot with one candidate for position 4 and two write-ins for position 6. Jon Becker, a former Holcomb Middle School teacher, seeks the unopposed seat, citing a wish to sustain school quality and support weighted grading to reward advanced coursework.
Dennis, husband to the Denver caregiver, faces concerns over how four children Jeff, 35, Eric, 29, Matthew, 25, Lyndsey, 22, and other school students are graded under a weighted system. The policy aims to reward tougher courses but narrows the pool of valedictorians, drawing parental criticism as the change takes effect.
Becker notes that taking advanced courses can positively impact grades and demonstrate to colleges that students are pursuing higher learning. The district discussion highlights the value of advanced coursework for college readiness and GPA signaling.
Economic analyst William Fruth says Finney County must ready industrial park space and train workers via Garden City Community College to attract higher wage primary jobs. His three public talks reviewed a 1973 onward economy, noting declines after the ConAgra plant fire and projected future downturns unless higher paying employers arrive.
Marie and Robert Sperling of Garden City celebrate their son Jason Sperling returning from his first Iraq deployment. The 32 year old staff sergeant, a United Methodist Youthville worker, served with the Army Reserves and endured 130 degree heat, mortar attacks, and a three day convoy before reaching a base north of Baghdad. He aided water purification for troop showers and dining halls. See Reserves, Page A3.
