County weighs funding Main Street program for downtown plan
Finney County faces budget strain after state transfers vanished in late 2002 leaving a 1.2 million annual gap. Commissioners consider a 15,000 immediate grant and up to 50,000 over five years to Downtown Vision Inc. for staff and office setup to pursue Kansas Main Street funding while FCEDC funding was trimmed. The panel weighed downtown versus agriculture and industry focus, with a decision due by May 20 and a April 19 return visit.

House GOP unveils education funding plan with local control
The package allows local boards to adjust the homestead exemption, boosting the statewide school levy for some districts. It would raise a $100000 home’s school tax from 184 to 230 annually and add 28.5 million for teacher mentoring bilingual programs and at risk students. Savings in the $10.2 billion budget would fund the measures.
